Your Mission: To encourage your students to read for enjoyment each day!
Individual Goal: 2,500 Total Minutes grades 4-8. 1,200 Total Minutes grades 1-3
Classroom Goal: 1,000 Average Minutes of all participating individuals
I Love To Read Downloads
Entry Deadline is Wednesday, December 13, 2013. Entries received after that day may still participate, but the package of materials may not reach the school before the holiday break. Materials to facilitate the program will be sent once we receive the entry form.
The Challenge begins Monday January 6, 2014 and continues until Friday March 7, 2014. Schools with students in grades 1-8 are eligible to participate. Schools must be located within the WISH-TV viewing area. Schools that come back from break after January 7th can start the program when they return to school.
Schools will choose one (1) I Love to Read Challenge coordinator who will be our contact, retain completed student logs, verify results, and submit all documents pertaining to the I Love to Read Challenge for the entire school. Most correspondence is by email so please be sure and include on the entry form legibly. Also please make sure WISH-TV is not blocked from your email system or provide an alternate email address that is not blocked.
Students in participating classrooms will keep a log of the amount of time they spend reading voluntarily during the Challenge period. Assigned textbook reading will be excluded. Assigned fiction books or novels are ok. In addition to student personal reading time, reading aloud by teachers, parents or caregivers should be included as long as it is not textbook reading. A calendar log and letter to the parents will be included in the packet to participating schools. We will also send a version in Spanish as an option. Reading minutes can also be tracked online if you have a program at school that will help track online. WISH-TV does not need the individual minutes from each child at the end of the program. We will have a form to fill in that comes with the packet.
To determine the classroom average to be eligible for the class award, add the total reading times of each participating student in your class. Then divide the combined reading times by the number of students in the class. Add any minutes spent reading aloud as a class (excluding textbook reading).
Any student who reads at least 2,500 total minutes for grades 4-8 and 1,200 total minutes grades 1-3 during the Challenge period has met the I Love to Read Challenge and is eligible for prize drawings. Reading minutes will count if done alone or read to by another person.
All students who participate will receive a certificate signed by the Governor and First Lady of Indiana.
A drawing will be held of students and classrooms who meet the challenge minutes. One student per grade (eight total) of all of the participating schools will be chosen by random drawing to win a $500 VISA gift card from Teachers Credit Union to open a savings account. One classroom per grade (eight total) that reaches the classroom challenge minutes will be chosen as well to receive a $250 check for classroom supplies, or other classroom needs, provided by Meijer. We want to thank our generous sponsors for their significant prize donations.
We will also be selecting a Creative Teacher Award for a teacher that shows the most creative idea to motivate kids to read.
Challenge results, individual and classroom entries for the drawing, creative teacher nomination form and the certificate/gold seal request form must be returned to WISH-TV by March 7, 2014 to ensure that the proper amount of certificates are ordered and your eligible students are entered in the drawing.
Results will be e-mailed to each participating school in March. Certificates for each participating student signed by the Governor and First Lady will be sent by mail in April.
An awards ceremony, hosted by WISH-TV anchors, will be held at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis in April or May for all of the winning students and classrooms to receive their checks. The First Lady has been our special guest at the ceremony each year. Each winning student and classroom will get a picture taken with the hosts, special guests and sponsors. We will be inviting the entire winning classroom, along with teachers and parent chaperones. The winners are guests of the Museum for the day and enjoy a reception after the awards program.
