INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Mary Frances and Kathryn Stuff are the heart and soul of the Lawrence North swim team.
“I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of fun, and exciting, and team oriented athletes, but nothing like the Stuff sisters,” said Lawrence North Head Swim Coach Tom Burchill.
The Stuff sisters are fraternal twins, who look so different that most people can’t believe they’re even sisters. The differences continue in the swimming pool. Kathryn focuses on distance events, while Mary Frances’ specialties are sprints.
“We’re not really that competitive with each other because we do such different events,” Kathryn said. “But there’s always that sibling rivalry.”
The duo started swimming at the age of eight, and now spends just about every moment together training twice a day in pool.
“Swimming has brought us closer because we’re together so much that we’re basically forced to deal with each other,” Mary Frances said. “That gives us a way to get around arguing with each other.”
Their sisterly bond has carried over into their swimming family as well.
“They make the team more fun,” Burchill said. “But not just fun, that internal cheering, that pick me up when you need it, they both are great at that.”
