INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The man police say stole a car with a toddler in the back seat has been arrested.
Police say Donald Nixon took a neighbor’s car, with the woman’s 2-year-old daughter in the vehicle. They later found the girl at an apartment complex 11 miles away. She was OK and reunited with her mother, Emily Voss.
Investigators say Nixon came up to Emily Voss in her driveway and asked to borrow her phone. She offered to let him sit in her car to stay warm.
Her little girl was in the back seat, strapped into her car seat. The car had been running to keep the girl warm while her mother shoveled the driveway. That’s when Nixon drove off in the car.
Police say Nixon was recently released from a mental hospital.
Officers arrested him on Monday for trespassing at a CVS downtown. Nixon told police he was pan-handling to get gas money. Officers found the stolen car’s keys in his pocket. The vehicle belonging to the Voss family was found nearby.
He’s now facing charges for criminal trespassing, auto theft and criminal confinement.
