INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Friends of Indianapolis Dogs Outside, or FIDO, is reminding pet owners to keep their outdoor animals safe over the next several days.

FIDO will hand out straw to pet owners from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

In normal winter temperatures, a dog house with straw helps the animals stay dry and maintain body heat, but that’s not enough in this extreme cold.

FIDO is pleading that all owners bring outside animals indoors when it gets dangerously cold.

If you see a pet in danger, you’re encouraged to call the Mayor’s Action Line at 317-327-4622. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
