Authorities warn of hazardous road conditions

LOWELL, Ind. (AP) — Authorities are warning of hazardous driving conditions across much of Indiana, with state police reporting some whiteout conditions on Interstate 65 in northwestern Indiana.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security reports 11 counties in northern and central Indiana have issued the highest level of travel warnings. More than 30 others are recommending only essential travel.

State police say I-65 between Lafayette and Lake County is dangerous from blowing snow in open areas.

Officials is northeastern Indiana’s Steuben County say some rural roads are impassable.

The National Weather Service recorded wind gusts about 50 mph as a cold front moved across the state early Monday.
