CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) – The Carmel Swim Club 200m freestyle relay team, made up of Claire Adams, Veronica Burchill, Amy Bilquist and Rachel Hayden, recently set a national record in the event at Winter Nationals in North Carolina.
“We knew we would come into the meet and do well, but we didn’t know we’d do that well,” said Carmel Swim Club Head Coach Chris Plumb.
But it wasn’t just any record. They beat a team that boasted Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky. It was also a time that would’ve been in the Top 12 at the NCAA Championships, a huge feat for a group of high schoolers.
“I was kinda shocked, but it was really cool,” Burchill said.
“I think the best part was just standing on the podium, because we all knew we put in our best effort, and we knew it panned out,” Bilquist said.
