Police: Purdue professor found shot at home

TIPPECANOE CO., Ind (WLFI/WISH) – The Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office released further details on a shooting that occurred on Thursday at a residence located on Farmstead Lane in West Lafayette.

The 911 call came in at approximately 8:43 p.m. The Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting that had occurred at a West Lafayette residence on Farmstead Lane, near the intersection of County Roads 250 North and 400 West.

When sheriff’s deputies arrived at the residence, they found two individuals inside, one was deceased and the other seriously injured.

Deputies report that Marcia Gentry, 51, had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to her lower extremities and was transported by ambulance to IU Health Arnett Hospital. She was later transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where she remains in serious condition. A Purdue University spokeswoman says Gentry is a professor at Purdue.

The report states Gentry’s husband William Byers, 64, was found dead in the residence with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is ongoing. No additional information is being released at this time.

The Tippecanoe Emergency Ambulance Service, Wabash Township Fire Department and the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office were on scene Thursday night assisting the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office.
