MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) — Muncie residents and the city’s mayor are expressing relief that the Indiana Department of Correction has stopped housing recently released sex offenders in two homes in the area.

The department had used two houses in Muncie’s Old West End neighborhood as temporary housing for offenders from 11 counties who lacked a place to go. Some residents say they weren’t told about the “DOC Assist” program or the proximity of sex offenders to their families.

DOC parole district supervisor Victoria Fafata tells The Star Press that the department no longer operates the facilities.

Neighborhood association president Brad King says residents didn’t intend to shut down the housing but wanted everyone aware that it existed.

Mayor Dennis Tyler says he’s pleased for residents.
