INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A patient who was the maid of honor at her sister’s wedding at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health last week has passed away.

Gabby Jones was fighting a rare blood cancer. When Gabby’s sister Danielle and her boyfriend, David, found out about her condition, he quickly proposed.

Less than 48 hours after the proposal, the couple was married in Gabby’s hospital room. Gabby was too sick to get out of bed, so Danielle pinned her maid of honor dress to her hospital gown.

During the ceremony, for the first time in a long time, Gabby showed emotion.  She began to cry and gave Danielle a thumbs-up – the special signal they used to say, “Everything is OK.”

Earlier this week, after the ceremony, Gabby was transferred to a hospital in Fort Wayne, closer to the family’s home. Saturday, hospital officials confirmed Gabby had passed away. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
