BUNKER HILL, Ind. (WISH) – A former Bunker Hill clerk is under investigation for reportedly not paying bills during her three years in office.

24-Hour News 8’s news gathering partner the Kokomo Tribune reports the town council opened the investigation after Sarah Betzner failed to get state approval of the town’s budget for three years straight.

Town officials are conducting the internal investigation, which will likely turn up more late fees and penalties incurred during Betzner’s term. The Attorney General may also decide to pursue criminal charges.

The investigation said to have uncovered Betzner racked up nearly $19,000 in late fees, penalties and interest on unpaid bills during her three years in office.

The Town Council President Robert Cox says Betzner wasn’t prepared to take the job and the mistakes were not intended.

“I think it all boils down to a lack of knowledge on her part,” he said. “In my opinion, I don’t feel that anything has been done criminally. It’s just been negligence.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
