It happened just before 8 a.m. on I-74 east at the 123 mile marker, which is near the St. Paul exit at the Shelby County/Decatur County border.
Police dispatch says a pickup truck was driving west on I-74 when it crossed the median, flipped over and landed on its side on the eastbound lanes. Three people were tapped inside the truck. Fire crews were able to rescue them and they were all taken to Major Hospital.
While fire crews were working to free the people trapped inside the car, oncoming traffic hit two of the fire trucks. Nobody was injured in that accident. The fire trucks suffered minor damage.
A Shelby County sheriff’s deputy told 24-Hour News 8 two fire trucks on the scene were hit by cars, which forced crews to close the highway in both directions for safety reasons. The roads were iced over. Salt trucks treated both sides of the road in the area and reopened the highway around 9 a.m
