Roof collapses at Fort Wayne mall

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A hallway at Glenbrook Mall in Fort Wayne is closed from Auntie Anne’s to the Harley store and to the TGI Friday’s entrance doors as crews work on a partial roof collapse. Mall signs indicate the hallway is “Closed for construction.”

Dave Fuller with the Allen County Building Department said the roof near Sears and TGI Friday’s collapsed due to snow. Sears has a higher roof and snow was blown down from that section onto the part that collapsed.

A structural engineer was at the mall for a couple of hours and did deem the rest of the mall safe.

Fort Wayne emergency dispatchers said mall security notified them of the incident around 2 a.m. on Tuesday.

Crews from a restoration company and board up company were at the section of the mall facing Coliseum Boulevard. Crews were entering through a service entrance next to Barnes and Noble with what appeared to be a wet vacuum. Others were entering the mall at an entrance next to TGI Friday’s and Sears.

The Glenbrook Mall Carousel Facebook page said the mall is open and the issues, “are very minor.”

In Nov. 2013, the mall sustained a water main break that damaged approximately 40 to 50 stores. Customers and employees inside the mall reported at the time that several inches of water were visible in some stores and common areas. The mall remained open but nearly half the building was roped off while restoration crews worked for several days to clean up and fix the problem.

Brian Cote, General Manager of Glenbrook Square issued the following statement:

“Tuesday, February 18, 2014 Glenbrook Square suffered a roof failure on a small portion outside of Sears with no injuries.  Glenbrook did open for business at regular time with only that small section closed to traffic.  The affected stores are TGI Fridays, River City Harley Davidson and one of the Auntie Anne’s Pretzels locations.  We have been working since 2 a.m. to get the area cleaned up and are preparing to repair damaged areas as well as taking precautions to prevent damage to other areas.  Glenbrook will continue to operate normally during this time as the tenant, employee, shoppers and workers safety is our #1 priority.  We only anticipate the few aforementioned stores’ to be affected.  Please call the mall office with any questions (260) 483-2121.”
