Vectren: Falling ice, snow could damage gas meters

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Vectren officials have issued a warning to their customers that falling ice could lead to gas leaks.

Vectren officials said on Tuesday they had a few isolated cases of melting icicles and chunks of snow and ice falling on and damaging gas meter sets, causing a gas leak issue.

If this happens, customers should call Vectren immediately at 1-800-227-1376.

To prevent this, customers should clear the icicles from the over-hanging areas if possible. Officials say if the gas meter is covered in ice, do not attempt to melt or chip the ice, because it could cause damage to the meter. Officials say let the ice melt on its own. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
