INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Fannie May is recalling one of its products because it may contain peanuts when the labeling failed to mention it.

The company is recalling 12,000 of its 4.0 oz., red heart-shaped gift box of assorted chocolates because the box includes one piece of candy that contains peanuts, a known allergen, and the food ingredient label on the box did not state that the product contained peanuts, according to an FDA release.

A customer reported that the ingredient label on the box of chocolates didn’t state it contained peanuts, which prompted the recall.

Those who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they come in contact with or eat the product. Only one incident has been reported to date where an individual had an allergic reaction.

The 12,000 boxes of chocolates were available for sale starting Jan. 10, 2014 in up to 450 drug stores, grocery stores and gift shops that included Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri and Indiana. Retailers that sold the product include, but are not limited to, Walgreens, Hallmark Gift Shops, Jewel Grocers and other independent retailers, the release said.

Consumers that have purchased the recalled product are urged to dispose of the product. Information on the recall can be found on Fannie May’s website here.
