FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) –  An ice dam has caused extensive flooding along State Street in Huntington and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources may bring in a backhoe to break up the ice and get the water flowing.

Twenty homes are in the affected area and some have been evacuated because of the high water, our sister station WANE reports.

A Huntington Emergency Management official said that the flooding is unusual.  State Street runs parallel with the Wabash River and it is hoped that once the ice dam is broken, the water level will recede.

Residents who have had to evacuate are being asked to go to the Etna Avenue fire station.
