INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) -Two adults and two children were killed, and two children are in critical condition Saturday morning after a residence fire on the city’s east side.
The fire broke out around 9 a.m. in the 2100 block of North Olney Street Saturday morning. The home is near the intersection of 22nd Street and Massachusetts Avenue.
Fire officials say a neighbor or passerby noticed the fire and called 911.
Officials say a man and a woman in their 30s or 40s and four children, ages 14, 11, eight and six, were taken to area hospitals. The man, woman and two of the children were pronounced dead at the hospital.
“They just brought out two or three babies in front of us and they weren’t moving. The babies were just lifeless, just lifeless,” witness Renzie Miller told 24-Hour News 8’s Walter Allen.
Those who died have been identified as 47-year-old Lionel “Leo” Guerra, 33-year-old Brandy Mae Guerra, 11-year-old Esteban Guerra, and 8-year-old Blanquita Guerra.
It took firefighters about 10 minutes to get the fire under control. One firefighter suffered slight injuries.
Officials were investigating the cause and origin of the fire Saturday morning, although foul play is not suspected. Fire officials say they could not find any working smoke detectors in the house.
Officials say eight people have been killed so far this year in Indianapolis due to fires.
