FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A man died Saturday night after accidentally shooting himself in the chest. It happened just after 8:00 p.m. at 1419 Landers Court on the city’s north side.

Fort Wayne police said the man was trying to sell a gun to a family member when the gun went off.  Officers gave the man first aid, but he was pronounced dead on the scene, our sister station WANE reports.

Fort Wayne Police Department spokesman, Chris Felton, said the incident serves as an important reminder for anyone handling a gun.

“Always treat the gun as if it’s loaded. Even if you’re sure it’s unloaded, still treat it as if its loaded. Never point a gun at anything or anyone you’re not willing to destroy. Treat it as loaded all the time,” said Felton.

According to police, foul play is not suspected and there are no charges at this time. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
