WABASH, Ind. (WANE) – Indiana State Police said a former bookkeeper for the Wabash County Clerk’s Office stole around $75,000 over two years by depositing some of the clerk’s office’s funds into her own personal bank account.
According to police, Sara Chamberlain, 44, of Urbana, was arrested Friday. The investigation began in September of 2013 after an Indiana State Board of Accounts audit showed missing funds in accounts controlled by the Wabash County Clerk’s Office.
Detectives said Chamberlain’s bookkeeping responsibilities required her to collect various fees paid to the clerk’s office. She was also in charge of keeping an accurate accounting record of the total dollar amount of the fees paid, our sister station WANE reports.
Police said Chamberlain lied about the dollar amount and then deposited some of the funds into her own bank account. From 2011 to September 2013, Chamberlain stole around $75,000, according to investigators.
Chamberlain faces charges of theft, official misconduct, and corrupt business influence.
ISP said Chamberlain is in the Wabash County Jail on a $12,500 bond plus an additional $1,000.
