LINTON, Ind. (WTHI/WISH) – One man died in Linton Friday night after police officials say he refused to give up his handgun.

The incident started when officers responded to a suicidal man around 6 p.m. Friday in the 400 block of SW J Street in Linton. Indiana State Police, Linton Police Department and the Greene County Sheriff’s Department responded. They found 48-year-old James Jarman on the back porch of the home with a handgun.  ISP officials said he wouldn’t give the gun to officers.

While officers tried negotiating with Jarman, there was what police called a “conflict” during which shots were fired. Jarman died at the scene, but it wasn’t clear if he took his own life or died from police gunfire.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
