EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — An Evansville man has been arrested on charges he beat his 69-year-old mother to death.

Authorities in Hopkinsville, Ky., say 29-year-old Jamal Mounts is being held in the Christian County Jail on preliminary charges of murder, first degree burglary, fourth degree assault and resisting arrest.

Hopkinsville, Ky., police tell the Evansville Courier & Press reports that officers found Mounts assaulting a 69-year-old woman Saturday in an apartment complex in the city about 75 miles south of Evansville.

Police found another woman identified as Mounts’ mother lying dead nearby. Police say she died from blunt force trauma. Police believe that Mounts fatally beat her before officers arrived.

The other woman was being treated at an area hospital.
