INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Kiev Tuesday, promising economic sanctions if Russia does not back off. He also announced the US will provide a billion dollars in energy subsidies to Ukraine.
24-Hour News 8 spoke with Indiana Senator Dan Coats Tuesday about the key to ending the conflict.
“I think it would be very difficult to address this militarily given the location. The way we stretch things out, given the way we have drawn down, I do not think this is the solution to the problem. I think the economic solution, the isolation of Russia outside the world community, and the economic impact are much better than a military option. I just don’t think it would work.” Sen. Coats told 24-Hour News 8.
One Purdue Political Science Professor agreed, but worries the situation in Ukraine could turn even more violent.
“Sometimes in international relations, there are no great outcomes. The best approach is to limit the amount islands that are going on. As the most powerful country in the world, we have the capacity to be mature,” Harry Targ said.
Russian president Vladimir Putin claims an illegal coup ousted President Viktor Yanukovych from power and that he’s still the legitimate Ukrianian leader.
Kerry says there’s no evidence to back those claims up.
