Baby killed in hit and run car crash

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indianapolis Metro Police say they are looking for two people who ran from the scene of a crash that killed a baby that was in the car.

The crash happened at 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Investigators say two vehicles were eastbound on 38th Street near I-65 when one vehicle struck the other from behind.

Police say the rear vehicle ended up in a ditch and the two occupants took off running from the scene.

Overnight, police dogs and a helicopter were used to try and find the pair, but so far nothing has turned up.

The front vehicle contained a family of 5.  The impact of the crash caused the smaller car to spin and eject a 7-month old from the vehicle’s rear passenger seat.

When officers arrived, they found the 7-month old near a guardrail.  The baby and mother were transported to Riley Hospital for Children by ambulance.

The mother went to the hospital in good condition.  The baby’s father, a teenager, and a 3-year old in the car were transported to the hospital in good condition. The baby later died at the hospital.

Police took statements at the scene that indicated the suspect vehicle was traveling in a reckless manner and at a high rate of speed on East 38th Street just prior to the crash. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
