INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Citizens Energy Group is warning Hoosiers that the change in weather could lead to more water main breaks around the city.

As the ground thaws, moisture pushes through the soil, which can cause pipes to move.

“Some areas of Indianapolis have water mains in the ground more than one hundred years old,” said Lindsay Lindgren, Citizens Vice President of Water Operations. “In order to combat water main breaks, the most effective solution is to replace the mains.”

Officials say Citizens experiences about 700 water main breaks per year.
