INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The family of Stephen Colbert released a statement Sunday after he was found safe in Indiana.
Police say Colbert was found at a Steak n’ Shake restaurant in Mooresville Saturday. He hadn’t been seen since Thursday, when he went missing near Clowes Memorial Hall at Butler University. Colbert was in town for the Music For All event with his high school band mates.
Saturday, Colbert was reunited with his mother and school officials.
Sunday, the family released this statement, thanking the public and officials for the safe return of their son:
We thank God for what we believe is a miracle, for the safe return of our son Stephen Colbert. We thank the people who found Stephen and called the local police. We thank the Indianapolis law enforcement team, the Butler University police force, the Wylie ISD team and the countless foot soldiers that put out flyers in the search effort. We thank all of the news media and social media for the dissemination of information about Stephen Colbert missing. We thank family members, friends and strangers for all of their efforts, for all of their prayers, all of which resulted in the best outcome we could have hoped for, the safe return of our son. Thank you all so much. All of you contributed to our success and we thank you for it.
We are still piecing together the events which may have lead to Stephen’s disappearance. We’ve been cautious about finding the balance between asking Stephen questions about his experience and still giving our son the rest and recuperation he so desperately needs. While we are not sure of everything that occurred, we believe a combination of distress over being separated from his band team, possible effects of medication he was taking, which we know causes loss of appetite and dehydration, and freezing nighttime temperatures in Indianapolis may all have contributed to the decisions he made. We do know that he lost or misplaced his cell phone, as we have not been able to recover it.
We once again thank everyone for all of your support, work and prayers. We now want to just spend time with our son and shower him with our love. We will work with his doctors as necessary to ensure his continued success going forward. We truly believe the over-pouring love and support, prayers, tireless work of posting and reposting Stephen’s pictures and information thru social and news media and all of the other countless work by all involved gave us this best possible outcome. May God bless you all.
