INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A 3-year-old girl was shot in the hand on the city’s east side on Tuesday evening.
According to IMPD dispatchers, it happened near East 21st Street and North Mitthoefer Road around 6:15 p.m.
The child, 3, was taken to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in good condition.
Detectives interviewed the child’s father, who told them the 3-year-old had retrieved the firearm from the couch area and accidentally shot herself. The dad and child were the only people in the apartment at the time of the shooting.
No arrests have been made. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case. Child Protective Services were also notified.

- Do not make firearms easily accessible
- Be aware of children and firearms proximity at all times.
