JAY COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – A Jay County woman is facing several charges for neglecting horses.

Jay County officials say 58-year-old Karen Barron was charged with four counts of animal cruelty.

According to court documents, investigators say a veterinarian contacted the Indiana State Police in November after he became concerned about horses on Barron’s property. The veterinarian said the horses were starving to death.

The documents say Barron is a truck driver and is not home often.  Witnesses told police she tries to rescue horses and then hires people to take care of the rescued animals.

When officials arrived at Barron’s property, they had to euthanize one horse that was too weak from malnutrition to survive.
