INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An investigation closed Washington and Market Street from Delaware to Alabama Friday night.

IMPD officials were originally called to the area on reports of an explosion between Talbott and Delaware Streets.

Officials at the scene told 24-Hour News 8 when they arrived at the scene, one manhole cover was blown off and they saw some electricity near the area.

Crews were blocking a few intersections because a few manholes were “steaming.”

A spokesperson with Indianapolis Power and Light said the incident stemmed from a cable failure. How or why that cable failure occurred has not yet been determined.

IPL planned to have crews working to replace the cable Saturday. Initial reports early Saturday morning indicated the roadway had re-opened, but IPL said crews planned to have Market Street closed, between Delaware and Pennsylvania streets, most of the day Saturday until work is completed. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
