INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A man responsible for a deadly hit and run received his sentence Friday. Corey Dunz will serve three years in a work release program and two years probation.
Police say Dunz, struck David Heady last Spring. Heady survived the accident, but he eventually succumbed to his injuries.
The judge also ordered Dunz to pay restitution to Heady’s family for burial costs.
David Heady’s family attended the sentencing and said their relative didn’t want the judge to sentence Dunz too harshly. Heady’s mother appeared pleased the judge honored Heady’s wishes.
“My son said he didn’t want him to go to prison. He’s been to prison before and he felt sorry for him,” said Heady’s Mother Betty Carota.
During the sentencing hearing, Dunz addressed Heady’s family.
“I’m sorry for what I caused ya’ll. I should’ve stopped, I was so scared,” said Dunz.
Part of Dunz’s sentence includes his license being suspended for two years.
“If the family was not as forgiving as they are, Dunz would be spending the executed time in the Department of Corrections,” said Marion County Deputy Prosecutor Tom Hirschauer.
24-Hour News 8, interviewed Heady days before he died, after being released from Wishard Hospital. At that time, Heady had just had his leg amputated and was looking forward to getting back to his life. Cartoa expressed relief after hearing the judge’s decision.
“I’m glad something came out of it,” said Carota.
