WHITE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – A dog is lucky to be alive after falling through the ice in White County Friday morning.

It happened near Boller Court on Big Monon, a tributary of Lake Shafer. The dog named “Buddy” fell through the ice about 50 feet from the shore around 10:30 a.m.

The Monticello and Monon Fire departments responded and a Monticello Ice Rescue Diver was able to save Buddy. Diver Shane Swaim says he was able to walk out to Buddy.

“Once I got on the ice he stopped howling. So I got down there next to the ice and just put my arm down in there and grabbed the bottom of him and pulled him right back up and we walked right back to shore,” said Swaim.

Swaim says their custom Water Rescue Truck allowed them to rescue Buddy within three minutes of their arrival. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
