BOONE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – Boone County deputies are still reviewing evidence taken from a deadly crash Sunday morning.

Deputies identified the victims as 18-year-old Jacob Shockley, and 18-year-old Richard Penny, Jr.

Investigators have not revealed what caused the two to slam into a tree in the 1700 block West of County Road 800 North in Boone County.

The two victims have ties to Western Boone High School. Shockley was a senior at the school, and Penny graduated just last year.

On Monday morning grief counselors, deputies, and mental health workers were on the scene to help students cope.

According to Superintendent Judi Hendrix, 800 students attend the high school and pretty much everybody knows everybody. Which made the announcement difficult.

“It was somber and quiet as they [students] were walking through the door,” said Hendrix.

The Boone County FACT Team was called in to investigate the scene. At this time, it is unknown if alcohol was a factor.
Funeral services for Jacob Shockley and Richard Penny Jr., will be held together at the Lebanon Christian Church this Thursday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
