INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard is getting support for his idea to build a new justice center at the site of the old GM Stamping Plant.

Marion County Sheriff John Layton threw his support behind the plan to use the site, which is located south of the Indianapolis Zoo along the White River downtown.

Ballard’s plan would put jails, courts and other corrections agencies all in one building. Read more about that plan here.

Sheriff John Layton released this statement Thursday:

Nothing is more important to me than the safety of Marion County residents, and I am certain that with this proposed location, that we will make the area surrounding the proposed Center an even safer place to live. The proximity to downtown is also a very attractive quality of the GM Stamping Plant location. As we move forward, I will continue to keep an open mind to ensure that the finished product is what is best for the citizens of Marion County, and I look forward to our continued work with the Mayor’s Office.
