VINCENNES, Ind. (AP) — An Art Deco stenciling dating from 1919 won’t be restored as part of a Knox County library renovation because library officials believe the cost outweighs the décor’s historical significance.

Library director Emily Bunyan says the decoration was found last month when an old medicine cabinet was removed from a wall in a restroom that is being remodeled at the Knox County Public Library. She said she asked the contractor what it would cost to replicate the artwork and was told it would approach $1,000.

The Vincennes Sun-Commercial reports that budget concerns derailed that plan.

The board agreed instead to spend $250 to memorialize the decor with a professional photograph and plaque to be placed in the main library.
