FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) –Police said a shooting in the parking lot of a Fort Wayne bar led to a fatal car crash early Saturday morning near Stellhorn and Hobson Roads. Haley Nellum, 17, of Fort Wayne was killed in the crash. According to the Allen County Coroner, Nellum died from multiple blunt force trauma. She is the fourth traffic fatality for Allen County in 2014.
Nellum was a sophomore at Bishop Dwenger High School where, according to the roster posted on the school’s website, she was a guard on the varsity girl’s basketball team. Flowers and stuffed animals now sit at the crash site as a small memorial to the teenager.

Officers said alcohol was a factor in the crash and have arrested a man in connection to the incident.
According to Fort Wayne Police Department spokesman Jason Anthony, around midnight, police responded to Corner Pocket Pub on St. Joe Center Road after hearing reports of gunshots being fired. Witnesses told police two cars then sped out of the bar’s parking lot.
According to investigators, Jeremy D. Washington, 35, was speeding southbound and ran a red light at the intersection of Stellhorn Road and Hobson Road. He hit Nellum’s car driving eastbound on Stellhorn Road. Nellum was unconscious and unresponsive when officers arrived, according to Anthony. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Washington was able to get out of his car, but his passenger was trapped. Washington was taken to the hospital in fair condition and his passenger was listed in serious condition as of Saturday morning.
Investigators believe Washington and his passenger were involved in a fight at Corner Pocket Pub. One of the people in Washington’s car fired gunshots in the bar’s parking lot.
Police said around 20 minutes after the fatal crash, a man arrived at Parkview Randallia’s emergency room with gunshot wounds. The victim told police he was shot while he was in the parking lot of Corner Pocket Pub early Saturday morning. Officers said he was released from the hospital Saturday afternoon.
Police arrested Washington on preliminary charges of Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death, Aggravated Battery, Criminal Recklessness Causing Serious Bodily Injury.
Hobson Road between Stellhorn Road and Timberhill Drive was closed for more than five hours while investigators collected evidence.
This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
