INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – More than 1,700 mayors across the country, including Mayor Greg Ballard, honored volunteers on Tuesday.

It’s part of the second annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service.

Mayor Ballard was at Gleaners Food Bank Tuesday morning as more than 200 volunteers from 12 organizations helped fill backpacks with healthy food for children in need.

In Indianapolis alone, there are more than 1,000 AmeriCorps and Senior Corps volunteers who help make a positive and lasting impact on the Circle City.

“It’s so great, we can get unified and get behind a cause this is not only to say thank you, for leaders and mainly mayors to say thank you for your service, it’s also a time to talk about impact, to recognize the work that you have done,” said Wendy Spencer, CEO of Corporation for National and Community Service.

After the project, as a special thanks to the volunteers, they were treated to a lunch at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
