South side garage fire spreads to 5 other structures

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indianapolis firefighters say a garage fire on the city’s south side caused damage to five other structures Tuesday evening.

It happened in the 3100 block of Asbury Street, which is near Interstate 65 and East Troy Avenue, just before 7 p.m. Fire officials say heavy black smoke could be seen fore mile.

A woman told firefighters that her 14-year-old grandson was in the house when he noticed the garage on fire in the backyard. He called 911 and everyone evacuated.

Firefighters say heavy fire spread to two out buildings, two fence lines, and the rear of the home. According to a release, 30 firefighters worked to bring the fire under control.
