COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) — The search for a kayaker who has been missing since Sunday morning was called off Monday evening while rescue crews considered a new strategy.
The search for 27-year-old Enrique Quinonez will continue Tuesday morning, after another unsuccessful day of searching marked by weather that made it even more difficult.
Quinonez, of Kalamzoo, Mich., disappeared Sunday when his kayak capsized in the Flat Rock River. His friend was able to make it to safety, but Quinonez wasn’t.
Indiana conservation officers plan to search an area farther south on Tuesday. Rain on Monday made it difficult for search crews, who hope water levels will decrease to aid their efforts.
Quinonez was not wearing a life vest and it’s believed he can’t swim.
Experts said conditions weren’t favorable for kayaking on Sunday due to higher water levels in rivers from multiple days of rain in Central Indiana. Quinonez wasn’t an experienced kayaker and capsized soon after entering the river.
