Store owner killed in Fort Wayne attempted robbery

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Police said a man found hurt at a Fort Wayne business died after what appears to be an attempted armed robbery.

According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, a man attempted to rob Smoke House Tobacco Outlet, located at 2217 S. Lafayette Street, Monday around 9:30 a.m.

A customer saw the victim lying down through a store window and called police.

According to surveillance video footage, the suspect was wearing a two-toned grey and black jacket. He was also wearing a red ball cap with some type of emblem on it. Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect.

The coroner will release the victim’s identity and cause of death once an autopsy is completed.

WISH-TV’s sister station WANE-TV spoke with several people who knew the owner.

“I don’t know why anybody would do anything like this because the guy helps everybody around the community; he’s a very good guy,” said Huma Lik, a customer of Smoke House Tobacco Outlet.
