Hostage OK, suspect in custody after west side incident

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) –- A man is in custody after a standoff with police Wednesday night.

Police say it was around 7:30 p.m., when they were sent to the 900 block of North Belmont Avenue. Callers told 911 dispatchers they’d heard a gunshot go off, then saw a man pulling his wife into their home.

Police say they tried to make contact with them, but didn’t get any response. They thought the woman may have been shot, and needed medical attention. They asked for SWAT assistance.

Officials say SWAT officers were able to force entry into the home, and found the woman who didn’t have any injuries. Her husband also wasn’t hurt, and was found hiding in the home.

He is identified as 38-year-old Shelley Johnson of Indianapolis, and police say he was taken into custody, facing a preliminary charge of Criminal Confinement.
