Cigarette leads to arrest in ATM theft

HOWARD COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) -According to State Police, a 28-year-old Kokomo man is under arrest after DNA linked him to an ATM theft.

Police say Mark McNew broke into a gas station last December and stole an ATM.  When officers found the abandoned ATM the next day in Galveston, Indiana, they noticed a partially burnt cigarette inside the ATM, and all the cash missing.

The cigarette was sent to the Indiana State Police Regional Laboratory in Ft. Wayne for DNA testing.  In January, McNew was arrested on an unrelated charge.  That’s when police collected his DNA.

After testing was complete, police learned the the DNA profile from the cigarette allegedly matched McNew’s DNA profile.

McNew faces burglary and theft charges in the case.
