One southbound lane of I-65 remains closed following tanker crash and fire

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A portion of southbound I-65 remains closed after a semi tanker crashed and caught fire.

Around 9:50 a.m. Thursday, fire crews were called to the 126 mile marker of I-65 near West 82nd Street.

Heavy smoke from the fire prompted emergency crews to close the southbound lanes of the interstate.

Around 10:30 a.m. crews were able to reopen the left lane to traffic.  The right lane remained closed to allow crews to offload the trailer and remove the wreckage.

Indiana State Police say the semi lost control and slid off the roadway about 50 feet into the treeline and caught fire.

There were no reports of injuries or environmental issues related to the crash.

Police say the right lane will be closed for several hours.
