One dead, two injured in northwest side apartment fire

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – One person is dead and two others were injured in an apartment fire on the city’s northwest side early Thursday morning.

At 3:49 a.m., fire crews were called to the Pangea Meadows Apartments near West 34th Street and Moller Road.

The first crews that pulled up to the scene reported the three story apartment building was fully engulfed in flames.

The blaze appeared to have started in a bottom floor apartment.

Firefighters located a 60-year-old woman in a lower level apartment back bedroom.  She was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition where she later died.

At least two other residents, including the woman’s husband were being treated for slight injuries.

Several residents said they evacuated after hearing the smoke detectors go off.

Firefighters rescued several people from upper apartment units.  Others reportedly jumped from their window onto mattresses on the ground.

Initial reports from the scene indicate the fire may have started as a result of food left unattended on a stove.

Six apartments were damaged, displacing nine residents.  Damage has been estimated at $200,000. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
