Child shot while sleeping in her northwest side apartment

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police say someone fired 10 to 15 shots into a west side townhome complex around midnight Thursday. They say a bullet hit a 12-year-old girl in the arm while she was sleeping.

But, police have yet to receive a single tip about the shooter. Police are imploring anyone to step forward with information regarding this or any other crime for that matter.

Police are starting from scratch and investigators believe there’s at least somebody out there who knows something. They say this vow of silence is a growing problem across the city.

Rodneisha Smith and her family were caught in the crossfire. They were just feet away in the neighboring unit from where the little girl was shot.

“It was real loud. It was ringing my ears from the inside,” said Smith.

Police say someone fired 10 to 15 shots into a unit at the Tara Townhouses. People sleeping were jolted awake.

“Get to the floor. Get to the ground,” said Kayla.

Still, not one person claims to have seen a thing.

“We want outrage from the community right now. They should be outraged that this happened,” said IMPD Lt. Christopher Bailey.

Police admit they need your help when fighting this kind of crime. But, it seems the cooperation stats are moving in the wrong direction. IMPD reports that upwards of 50 percent of aggravated assault victims do not cooperate with police.

“I know it was late, but there were probably people out and there were people in the neighborhood who know who has the weapons and who’s recklessly firing these guns,” said Bailey.

There’s the fear of retaliation and what Lt. Bailey says is some “distrust in the community.” He says it’s time we break down those walls.

“You are the eyes and ears of your neighborhood. You live there. You know who belongs, what doesn’t belong. You know what goes on,” said Bailey.

Smith and her family are now moving. They hope someone is brave enough to come forward.

“Yeah. I hope somebody does come forward about it because her daughter got shot,” said Smith

Kayla says until something’s done, she likely will stay away.

“I just said the other day that I really didn’t want to come back over here anymore because it’s always something going on and true enough something else happened. A little girl got shot. My little cousin plays with her all the time,” said Kayla.

The 12-year-old girl was taken to the hospital in good condition. She’s expected to recover.
