Family of 3 escape home after lightning sparks fire

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A family of three safely escaped after lightning touched off a fire in their northeast side home early Friday.

Around 3 a.m. the Renihan family awoke to multiple rounds of thunder and lightning.  Within minutes their alarms sounded and power went out in the house.

Shortly after that the family said they smelled something burning in an upstairs bedroom area, called 911 and quickly got out of the house.

Flames went through the roof of the two story brick home in the 5300 block of Roxbury Road.  That neighborhood is near East 56th Street and North Arlington.

Firefighters made an aggressive attack on the flames and brought the blaze under control within 20 minutes.

Investigators have ruled the fire was caused by lightning.  Damage is estimated at  $75,000. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
