Thousands of runners race through streets of Carmel

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) – Thousands of runners and walkers raced their way around a Hamilton County community on Saturday.

It happened at the 4th annual Carmel Marathon. 3,600 people registered for the marathon, half marathon and 8K.

One group of participants was representing Back On My Feet, an organization that helps homeless people restart their lives through running.

One man who graduated their program says running changed his life.

“Back On My Feet gave me the opportunity to do something for myself,” Philip Heinz said. “Nobody required it, nobody did anything else. It was just an accomplishment. Every race starts with one step and so does life and you just have to make that first one.”

Organizers say registration for the event jumped 17 percent from the previous year. About 350 volunteers helped put the marathon together. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
