MISHAWAKA, Ind. (AP) — Northern Indiana police say a 19-year-old man has been arrested on murder and attempted murder charges in a shooting that killed a young child.

Lt. David Wells of St. Joseph County police says Robert L. Griffin was arrested without incident Friday at a Mishawaka apartment complex.

Wells tells the South Bend Tribune that Griffin surrendered after police called his relatives and were able to enlist them to talk him into leaving the apartment.

Prosecutors filed one count each of murder and attempted murder Thursday against Griffin in the April 9 killing of 2-year-old John Swoveland Jr.

Police allege that Griffin fired the shot that killed the toddler.

Police are still searching for 23-year-old Xavier Primm, who faces a charge of assisting a criminal in the boy’s death. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
