Greenwood man arrested after nude child photo found

GREENWOOD, Ind. (Daily Journal) – Police are searching the computer of a Greenwood photographer who they say took a nude photo of a young boy. They’re now investigating whether he took more pictures.

Police say a woman reported finding child porn on 64-year-old John Spurr’s computer. Police arrested him and seized the computer.

Police say the computer was kept in Spurr’s home, where he also operated a photography business, Evergreen Photographic Illustration and Design.

The Easter celebrations for one family were clouded by the news of what happened next door.

24-Hour News 8 spoke with some people near his home and both were well aware of Spurr’s arrest. One in particular says it’s all his family has been talking about, especially when they factor his profession.

“I just want to apologize to the kid that it happened to and the family. It’s awful,” said neighbor James Beatty.

According to a police report, Spurr told police he used a cell phone to take a nude picture of a young boy he was acquainted with. That child was not the child of a customer of his photography business. He also said he used the Internet to download pictures of nude children, 24-Hour News 8’s news partner The Daily Journal reports.

Police are now working to determine if Spurr took more photos, while also planning a forensic search of his computer.

The woman who first alerted police to the pictures says they were in a folder on his computer titled “pornography.” Spurr told police he downloaded the pictures after doing online searches.

“Kids don’t, can’t defend for themselves,” Beatty said. “They don’t know and there should be nobody out there like that to be able to do that to kids.”

24-Hour News 8 learned it was one of Spurr’s daughters who was the woman who called police.

She admitted to us she was the one who called police after finding the pictures, but didn’t want to comment any further when we met her at the front door.

“I talked to a friend about that and I would do the same thing,” said Beatty. “I’m sure she’s hurt but she did the right thing. I’m proud of her.”

Spurr was taken to the Johnson County Jail and faces three charges of child exploitation.
