INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A months-long debate over what Indiana children should learn in school and at what grade level is set to take one of its final moves forward Monday.

Proposed state education standards will go in front of an education round table co-chaired by Gov. Mike Pence and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz Monday afternoon.

A group called Hoosiers Against Common Core organized a rally opposing approval inside the Statehouse. Members said they would call upon the governor and education leaders to reject the standards draft. The group has encouraged the state to re-adopt Indiana’s standards used for English/language arts in 2006 and those for math in 2000.

The Judgment Day Rally was scheduled to gather in the south atrium of the Statehouse at 1 p.m. before marching to the Indiana Government Center where the round table meeting was to happen.

A vote was scheduled during the meeting late Monday afternoon. If approved, the proposal would move to the State Board of Education for a final vote April 28.

The standards proposal was created by 100 teachers and industry representatives with consideration of input from public comment. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
