School bus crashes, gunfire reported in area

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An accident involving a school bus Tuesday afternoon happened in the same area that gunfire was reported, police dispatchers confirm.

It happened on the near north side by the intersection of 52nd Street and Carvel Avenue. The crash shut down a large portion of 52 Street as police went back over for evidence.

The gunfire didn’t strike the school bus, according to dispatchers. Police say a 17-year-old driver trying to get away from gunfire crashed into the school bus.

Police say they found shell casings several blocks away from where the girl says she was being shot at.

Residents were grateful to learn no one was seriously injured.

“It’s wonderful they weren’t hurt, they are our future,” said Resident Gary Lacy.

Seven kids were transported to hospital for precautionary reasons. The driver who crashed into the bus was taken to the hospital for minor discomfort to the leg. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
