GARY, Ind. (AP) — Northern Indiana police say truck drivers pulled a Gary police officer from his burning squad car following a crash along a highway overpass that injured the officer.

Gary Police Chief Wade Ingram tells The Times of Munster that passing truck drivers stopped and pulled the 26-year-old Officer Michael Mitchell from his squad car after Thursday night’s fiery crash. Mitchell was taken to a local hospital with injuries to one of his legs.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department says Mitchell was southbound on an overpass over the Interstate 80-94 Borman Expressway when another motorist cut him off. His squad car then struck a curb and became engulfed in flames.

Lake County police spokeswoman Patti Van Til says the other driver fled the scene. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
