HENRY COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – A 3-year-old Henry County child was flown to Indianapolis Saturday morning after police say he was hit by a heavy piece of equipment.

According to a release from the Henry County Sheriff’s Department, at around 10:37 a.m. officers responded to the 2900 block of East 875N after receiving the report that the child had been hit.

Officers learned the operator of a Caterpillar skid-steer loader–the boyfriend of the child’s mother–was using the equipment in a field near their home. The child was riding a battery operating toy near the equipment.

Officers say the man didn’t see that the boy was behind the equipment and backed over the 3-year-old. The child’s mother and another child were nearby.

The 3-year-old boy was taken my medical helicopter to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.

The accident is under investigation. Officers say the man complied with a blood draw for analysis, which is procedure for accidents involving serious injury. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
